5 frequently asked questions

  • Reservations made online can be canceled online. To change a reservation, please contact the relevant branch or the call center by calling +31 (0)88 - 900 55 55.

    The following cancellation policies apply:

    • You can cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled pick-up time.
    • If you cancel within 24 hours of pick-up, a cancellation fee of up to €50 will apply.
    • No-shows will be charged the full rental amount.
    • If you prepaid and cancel at least 24 hours in advance, the full prepaid amount will be refunded to your account within 5 business days.
    • If the vehicle is returned earlier than agreed, no refund will be given for unused rental days.
    • Our general rental terms and conditions also apply.

  • Yes, a deposit is applicable to vehicle rentals. You can pay for the rental of vans and cars in the mini category by debit card, for all other vehicles you will need a credit card.

    The amount of the deposit depends on the rented vehicle and car class. And at Avis, you can reduce the amount of the deposit by lowering the deductible:

    • for passenger cars, the minimum deposit is €250.00;
    • for vans, the minimum deposit is €350.00;
    • for trucks up to and including class T3OK, the minimum deposit is €750.00.

    You pay the deposit at the location when you pick up the vehicle. This also applies to reservations made online or through the call center. Depending on the car class, you can pay the deposit in the following ways:

    • Mini and Economy class; debit or credit card;
    • Compact class (medium-sized car class); credit card;
    • Intermediate and Standard classes (large car class); credit card
    • Full Size, Premium, Luxury and Special class (large car class); 2 credit cards or 1 credit card and 1 debit card payment. All cards must be in the renter's name. This is also the main driver
    • FVMR; debit or credit card;
    • Passenger van (9 pers.); debit or credit card;
    • Van; cash, debit or credit card;
    • Truck; credit card.

    Payment by debit card can only be made for vans and cars in the Mini class from our Amsterdam Overtoom branch; payment for other vehicles can only be made by credit card.

    At our locations in Rotterdam (excluding the airport), Breda and Tilburg, up to the Compact class, payment can be made by debit card; payment for other vehicles can only be made by credit card.

    Please note:

    • At branches at airports, payment can only be made by credit card.
    • Payment by debit card can only be made for vans and cars in the Mini class from our Amsterdam Overtoom branch; payment for other vehicles can only be made by credit card.
    • At our locations in Rotterdam (excluding the airport), Breda and Tilburg, up to the Compact class, payment can be made by debit card; payment for other vehicles can only be made by credit card.

    All cards must be in the name of the main driver. The following credit cards are accepted: VISA, Eurocard/Mastercard, Discover/Diners, UnionPay (CUP) and JCB.

    Please note: Contactless credit cards and debit cards (such as Revolut and Bunq) are not accepted.

  • You are allowed to drive an Avis rental car from the Netherlands to the countries listed below:

    Andorra Belgium Denmark Germany France Finland Italy Ireland Luxembourg Norway Portugal Austria Spain, excluding Ceuta and Melilla. United Kingdom Sweden Switzerland Please indicate at the pickup location that you want to drive abroad.

  • To rent a car from Avis, there are a number of conditions. You can read what the conditions are here.

    To rent a car in the Netherlands you must:

    • Be at least 21 years old.
    • Have held your driver's license for at least 1 year.
    • If you are under 25, you have a limited choice of passenger cars.
    • Under 25, you can rent the following vehicle classes: MCMR, ECMR, ECAR, EWMR, CDMR, ECMD, CCAR, CWMR, CDMD, DCMR DCAR IDMR IDAR SVMR SVAR PVMR PVAR.
