General Rental Terms and Conditions
Renting a car is not always easy, and there are often many questions involved. Is this the best price for this car? How much can it hold? What about my excess?
Renting a car is not always easy, and there are often many questions involved. Is this the best price for this car? How much can it hold? What about my excess?
That's why Avis makes sure you’re always clear about what you're getting. No surprises; simply the best car for you. Pick up the car in your neighborhood, or even have it delivered to your home, and always with the right insurance. We explain the whole process as clearly as possible on our website. We’ve also tried to make these terms and conditions as clear as possible. Still not clear? No problem. We’ll be happy to help you.
Step 1: booking a car
There are three ways to book an Avis vehicle. The easiest is through our website. However, you can also do so by phone through the call center (reachable on +31 (0)88 - 900 55 55) or stop by one of our locations.
What counts as one rental day, and what about half days?
- For vans and trucks, one rental day is equal to one calendar day, or from midnight one day to midnight the next.
- For passengers cars, one rental day is equal to 24 hours, and the 24 hours can start at any time during the opening hours of the location from which you collect the car.
- If you would like to book the car for part of the day only – for the afternoon, for example – you can't book it in advance. Instead, you will need to come to the location to check if a car is available. We do not rent cars for a period of a day and a half. You can either choose a half-day (4 hours) or individual full days. You cannot rent a car for a half-day during the weekend.
- What does the price include and exclude? The price of the rental car includes VAT, third-party insurance, standard excess and the stated free kilometers. The price of the rental car does not include fuel costs, additional insurance and additional driver(s).
- While making the booking, you will be given the option of reducing the standard excess. The excess is always part of the deposit.
- A deposit is applicable to the car rental (you can find the amount on your booking confirmation).
- Drivers under the age of 23 years are subject to double the amount of excess and associated premiums. If you indicate while booking on our website that you are under the age of 23, you will immediately see the correct amount displayed.
- Our electric vehicles come with a tag that you can use to charge the rental car at most charging stations in the Netherlands. We charge you €0.18 per km driven for this. The amount includes VAT and service costs.
- If you are going to rent the car for a longer continuous period, please note that you may not drive for an unlimited number of kilometers. If you travel an extreme distance, we may decide not to extend the rental and/or not to enter into new rental(s) with you. If you are planning to travel long distances, please contact us first.
What is the excess and how do you pay it?
In the event that the rental car is damaged, a standard excess and deposit apply. This is the amount that you have to pay in the event of incidents such as a flat tire, denting the vehicle yourself, or the vehicle being dented by another party. Often the excess is deducted from the deposit. For drivers under the age of 23, the excess is twice as high. However, drivers of all ages can lower the excess. When you make a booking, the excess will be calculated automatically.
How much is the deposit and how do you pay it?
The amount of the deposit and the method of payment vary by car class and location. We show you the exact amount when you book online. You always pay the deposit at the location. For some cars you will be required to use a credit card, or even two credit cards. Here are some guidelines for the amounts:

Please do mention that you are going abroad to the location where you will pick up the car. Please note: you must make sure you comply with local laws and regulations. For example, you must display a vignette in Switzerlabrancjhesnd and Austria. Things like vignettes, reflective vests and winter tires do not come standard with every Avis vehicle. In some cases, Avis may choose not to rent out a car. If your plans involve anything extreme, please contact us.
If you are travelling to London, take the London Low Emission Zone (LEZ) into account
There are strict emission standards in place for most neighborhoods in central London. The requirements apply to trucks and vans, as well as passenger vehicles. There are no warning barriers to warn you – at most, you can expect to see some roadside information signs. Therefore, pay good attention as it is easy to make a mistake and fines can be up to 500 or even 1,000 pounds.
There are cameras in place in the LEZ districts that read vehicle license plates to check that vehicles comply with the emission standards. Drivers whose vehicles do not comply must pay a daily levy. For trucks and horse transport vehicles, for example, the daily rate is well over €230 (£200), and driving a camper van in the LEZ will cost you about €160 (£100) per day.
For this reason, you are going to London and need to enter a Low Emission Zone, it is best to register the vehicle's registration number with Transport For London (TFL) and pay the £100 or £200 charge. Of course, if the car meets the environmental requirements, you may also not have to pay a levy.
Click here for more information on London's Low Emission Zone tolling scheme.
Tip: When traveling abroad in a rental car, make sure you have a credit card with you. In the event of breakdown or damage, most suppliers in other countries will want to see a credit card, even if the costs are covered under the general rental terms.
Step 2: picking up the car
Bring your identification document
When picking up the rental car, always bring the following documents with you. All of the documents must be in the name of the person renting the car. Avis will check the details just to be sure.
- A valid driver's license (that you have had for at least one year).
- Renters with a residential address in the Netherlands should bring address identification in the form of a paper or digital bank statement, pay slip, extract from population register, mail from a utility company, or a copy of a cell phone contract. You may also submit a digital version of the documents, by sending the documents to the location office by e-mail. The documents should be no older than 30 days.
Renters not living in the Netherlands will need to bring, in addition to the driver's license, a valid passport and a credit card (VISA, Eurocard/Mastercard, Discover/Diners, UnionPay (CUP) and JCB) when coming to pick up the rental car.
Please note: Contactless credit cards and debit cards (such as Revolut and Bunq) are not accepted.
To drive a truck of category T20K or larger, you must possess a driver's pass. You must bring this pass with you when you pick up the truck. You do not need a driver’s pass for a truck in the T10R category.
More than one driver
All drivers must be present when picking up the rental car, and show a valid driver's license that they have held for at least one year, along with address identification.
Driving license validity and minimum age
- The renter and any additional driver(s) must have held a valid driver's license for at least one year. Driver’s licenses held for a shorter period and temporary driver's licenses are not accepted.
- You must be at least 21 years old to rent a car from city and airport locations.
- To rent the Full Size category (for example, the BMW 3 series or equivalent) and larger, the renter and any additional driver(s) must be at least 25 years old.
- The driver's license must be in a Western script. If this is not the case, then you must make sure you have a valid International Driver's License (in addition to your original driver's license).
- If the driver’s license explicitly states that it is only and exclusively valid in the issuing country, then it is not valid in the Netherlands.
Paying for the car
If you reserved the car online, then you have already paid. If you reserved the car online or there is an amount outstanding, then you can pay this by debit card at one of our locations or transfer the payment amount to account number NL47ABNA0549212841, quoting your rental agreement number and your invoice number.
In it is also possible to pay by credit card. Upon your departure, we will authorize the deposit on your credit card. When you return the vehicle, we will only charge the payable amount. The deposit authorization will then lapse. If you have nothing more to pay, we will cancel the authorization.
Paying the deposit and excess
In the event that the rental car is damaged, a standard excess and deposit apply. This is the amount that you have to pay in the event of incidents such as a flat tire, denting the vehicle yourself, or the vehicle being dented by another party. Often the excess is deducted from the deposit. You can find the exact amount of the deposit and excess on your booking confirmation. It is important to know that the deposit and excess are a form of reservation. If you don’t incur any damage or experience a breakdown, then the amount will be ‘released’ again after the rental period.
You can find more information about the amount of the deposit or excess here.
Step 3: returning the car
Your rental period is over, and we hope that everything has gone well! You must return the car to the location at the time you agreed. If you opted for our one way service in advance, then you will be returning the car to another location at an additional cost. The location may be closed when you return the car; if that is the case, please return the key by means of the key-return box.
