Plan your tripDrive the eight miles into Birmingham, where retail therapy is provided by the Bullring's 160 shops and two department stores. England's second city has more miles of canal than Venice. Negotiate them at your leisure by canal boat.
Chocolate lovers may wish to park up four miles south of the city. As well as telling the history of cocoa and the Cadbury family, Cadbury World reveals displays of chocolate-making machines and chocolate-themed rides. Surrounding the aromatic chocolate works, pretty Bournville Village was built by the family to accommodate early 20th-century factory workers.
Reach the postcard perfect villages of the Cotswolds in an hour. Ancient university city Cambridge and an afternoon of lazy punting is under two hours' drive away. Or head southwest to explore Wales. Cross first into the second-hand-bookshop capital of the world, Hay-on-Wye. The mill towns of the Peak District National Park (heaven for hikers) lie 90 minutes to the north.
