Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions about a rental car with a tow bar

  • Yes, if you are towing a trailer, caravan, or bike rack that obscures the license plate of the rental car, you are legally required to display a white license plate showing the registration number of the towing vehicle. Because the license plate of your rental car is only confirmed at the time of pick-up, you will need to have the white license plate made yourself and bring it with you.

  • With a standard category B driver’s license, you are allowed to tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 750 kg (empty weight + payload). Is the trailer heavier? In that case, you may still tow it with a category B license only if the combined weight of the rental car and the trailer does not exceed 3,500 kg. For heavier combinations, you will need a category BE driver’s license (trailer license). Always make sure you have the correct license for the combination you intend to drive.

  • Yes, tow bars are available upon request. We have a limited number of cars and vans in the Dutch fleet with a tow bar. Rental cars with tow bar can be reserved through our online reservation system, through our call center in the Netherlands, or at one of our Dutch Avis locations.
