Plan your journey around BrindisiBrindisi sits in Southern Italy on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and reveals a natural port, the heart of its long history. Your Avis hire car is the perfect way to explore this region of Italy.
Originally a Greek outpost the port of Brindisi has been a gateway for the Romans and latterly the merchants of Venice on their journeys to the east. The coastline surrounding Brindisi boasts shallow waters and long sandy beaches, dotted with charming villages and one of Italy’s foremost nature reserves. Explorers will find countryside occupied with olive groves, vineyards and orchards, with ancient villages dominated by forts and watchtowers.
Brindisi itself is home to many historic buildings that tell the story of its ancient past. The Roman column marks the start of a sweeping set of steps leading down to the waterfront promenade. Evidence can also be seen of the next major event in Brindisis history as a staging point for the Crusades. The cathedral, a must-see, dates back to the Knights Templar, although substantially remodelled in the 17th century after an earthquake. To see a true example of a Knights Templar church head to the Tempio di san Giovanni al Sepolcro; built from Norman stone it conforms to the circular plan favoured by the Knights.
Most modern Brindisi life centres around the Corso Garibaldi, a palm-lined stretch that links the train station to the seafront promenade. Many cafes and restaurants are located here and it’s a great place to relax and take in the local atmosphere.
