How much does it cost to rent a van?

  • To get a good idea of the total cost of renting a van, we recommend you use our online reservation module. When renting a van, one rental day is equivalent to one calendar day. If you want to rent the vehicle for just one day, then you should return it the same day. This will save you a full rental day.

Most van rental companies base the rental price on a number of factors:

    • How big is the van?
    • What is the rental period?
    • What distance is to be driven?
    • Which insurances apply?

There may be additional costs such as:

    • additional insurances
    • extras (tow bar, moving equipment, all-season tires)
    • additional drivers

Cheap van rental is available from a variety of providers throughout the Netherlands. Costs generally come to around 100 to 200 euros per day. Our advice for a getting good deal is to make sure you know exactly what you want to transport and how much time you need to do it. This will help you find the perfect van for your needs at the most competitive rate.

Check out our useful comparison tool to find the right van instantly. In addition to price, ease of use is also an important factor in the decision-making process. For example, you won’t want to have to go too far to pick up and drop off a van.

  • No, Avis does not charge a reservation fee for making a booking, whether through the call center or locations, or online.

  • Yes you can! You do not need a credit card to rent an Avis van. You can also pay the van rental deposit with a debit card.

    Please note:

At Avis airport locations, you can only pay with a credit card. Only compact vans and cars in the Mini class can be paid by direct debit at our Amsterdam Overtoom location. Other vehicles can only be paid for by credit card. At our locations in Rotterdam (excluding the airport), Breda and Tilburg, vehicles up to the Compact class can be paid for by debit card. Other vehicles can only be paid for by credit card.

  • Yes, a deposit applies when renting a van. You pay the deposit at the location when you pick up the vehicle. This also applies to reservations made online or through the call center. For vans, the minimum deposit is €450.00. You will receive the deposit in full within a few days after returning the vehicle to us undamaged and with a full tank.

  • The third-party insurance premium is included as standard in our rental rates.

Driver and occupant insurance (Schadeverzekering inzittenden) is not included as standard but you can include it in your booking. This insurance compensates an occupant (including the driver) in the event that they suffer damage as the result of an accident.

  • When you rent a van from Avis, you receive 100 kilometers per day by default. If you drive more than 100 kilometers per day, you pay a fee for each additional kilometer driven. This amount can vary between 0.17 and 0.25 cents per kilometer, depending on the value of the rental van.

  • In the event of damage to the van, there is a standard deductible per incident. This is the amount (up to a certain maximum) that you have to pay for incidents such as a flat tire, denting the vehicle yourself, or the vehicle being dented by another party. If there is no damage, then you will not be charged. The amount of the deductible depends on the van you are renting and whether you are younger or older than 23.

Decision aid for van rental

If you’re unsure which bus is best for your move, use our van rental decision aid. Always bear the cargo space and load capacity of a van in mind. If the van is too small, you may have to make more trips than you planned for, which is very inconvenient if you are moving far away.

*The prices below are displayed as starting prices per day. The final price depends on the vehicles available, duration of the rental, and the number of kilometers.

Driving license rules

What driver's license do I need to drive a van?

If you are the driver, then you should know that you can drive all our vans with a B-class driver’s license – no special license is required. If you are planning to alternate drivers, then the additional driver must also be present when you pick up the rental van.
Tip: You can drive a van with a B-class driver's license, which allows you to drive cars and vans with a maximum total weight of 3500 kilograms and with a maximum of eight seats (excluding the driver). You only need a special bus license if a van has more than eight seats.

Taking a rental van abroad

Can I take a rental van abroad?

Yes, it’s no problem to drive a rental van in other countries. There are some restrictions and rules, however.

Renting a van and returning it in another country

If you are moving from the Netherlands to another country and want to rent a van for your move, you can do so, but you should bear in mind that the van must also be returned to the Netherlands. You may not return a rented van to an Avis location in another country. Read more about this below.

Going abroad with an Avis van

You can drive a rental van abroad with no problems, but some restrictions and rules apply. For example, when you pick up your van, you must mention that you want to drive abroad. You may only drive from the Netherlands to the following countries: Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Finland, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Austria, Spain (excluding Ceuta and Mellila), the United Kingdom, Sweden and Switzerland. This has to do with the vehicle insurance.

Tip: Take a credit card with you when you travel abroad. In the event of breakdown or damage, most garages in other countries accept only credit card payments for repairs, even if the cost is covered under the general rental terms.

Emissions stickers and toll vignettes

You must make sure you comply with local laws and regulations. For example, you must display a vignette in Switzerland and Austria. Things like vignettes, reflective vests and winter tires do not come standard with every Avis vehicle.

If you are traveling to an Umwelt zone in Germany, you will need an emissions sticker. You can request it from places such as Tüv Nord or DEKRA. You must include a copy of the license plate along with your application. Unfortunately, Avis cannot provide a copy of the vehicle registration certificate prior to you renting the car. This means that customers who want to visit "Umweltzones" in a rented Avis van can only purchase a sticker after picking up the van themselves.

What should I be mindful of when driving a moving van?

Is driving a van difficult?

Driving a van or moving van can be perceived as difficult. Indeed, the large turning radius of a van takes some getting used to. If you have no experience driving a van and are very hesitant, ask a staff member. They can explain how to drive the bus. We can give you the following tips in advance.

Busje besturen verhuisbus avis

Tips for driving a van

  1. Always keep in mind the larger dimensions of the van. The height and width of a van may prevent you from driving everywhere. Especially when entering garages, driving under overpasses or along narrow streets, it is important to know the outside dimensions of a van.
  2. Allow ample distance between you and other road users. A van has a longer braking distance than a passenger car, especially when fully loaded. Allowing ample distance reduces the chance of accidents.
  3. Make good use of the side mirrors. Most rental vans have parking sensors, but it is also always important to also check the side mirrors, especially when turning corners, parking and turning around.
  4. Reverse parking a van is easiest because of the length and visibility of the vehicle. If you have a passenger, they can help you when you’re parking. By stepping out, standing behind the van and giving hand signals, a second person can help you get into a tighter parking spot.
  5. Figure out the route you will take with your rental van in advance. This will help you avoid getting stuck in a busy city center.

If you still need to refuel, bear in mind that there are two different refueling arrangements in car rental, namely FULL-FULL and FULL-EMPTY.

Walk around the van one more time and take pictures if necessary. Provide proof that there is no new damage. Once you have gone home, it is much more difficult to challenge any damages or disputes.

Full-full and full-empty arrangement

In a full-full arrangement, you receive the rented van with a full tank of fuel and you must also return the van with a full tank. Avis also uses this arrangement, so please return the van with a full tank. If you have a FULL-EMPTY arrangement, then you get the van with a full tank of fuel, but you do not have to fill up the van before returning it. Check your rental terms to see what applies to you.

Want to return the rented van on a Sunday when the location is closed? Even if the location is closed, you can easily return your van. Park the vehicle at the location and leave the key in the key drop box. Be careful where you park the van, and check whether you have to pay for parking. This is because you remain liable until an employee can take delivery of the vehicle (at the opening time of the location on the next business day).
