Even the Bolshoi, Moscow’s oldest theatre and home to the world renowned Bolshoi ballet company, has undergone something of a transformation in recent years. Close to Red Square is GUM; a huge complex with extensive luxury shopping options and an array of fine dining establishments.
Those in search of visual rather than culinary nourishment should make for Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts; split over three buildings it has everything from Renaissance masterpieces by Botticelli to extensive collections of Egyptian jewellery and weaponry. Every December the museum plays host to the international musical festival “Svyatoslav Richter's December nights” created by the eponymous pianist in 1981.
In the evenings Moscow changes tempo with street entertainers, theatres and restaurants all vying for attention. If ballet isn’t your thing head to the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory; attracting musicians from around the world there are numerous performances throughout the year, many of them free. Those in search of more contemporary nightlife will find plenty in Patriarch Ponds, a historic neighbourhood with many bars and nightclubs popular with both locals and tourists.

Losiny Ostrov National Park (Elk Island Park)
Escaping the city to the north. a 30 minute drive from Moscow city centre via city Bogorodskoe and Mira will bring you to the tranquil beauty of Losiny Ostrov National Park, located on the outskirts of Moscow. Starting at Sokolniki Park it stretches for kilometres revealing wild forests, tranquil streams and wondering elks and goats. The park in its current form was created in 1983, however it has an illustrious history as the former hunting ground of Russia’s grand princes and tsars.
Just under a 45-minute drive west from central Moscow via the E30 is the charming village of Peredelkino. With its brightly coloured church and houses it’s most famous for The Pasternak house-museum. The former home of author Boris Pasternak most the celebrated author of the enduring classic Doctor Zhivago. Peredelkino is designated a historical and cultural reservation due to the sheer number of Russian writers who have lived in the settlement.
An hour and a half drive north-east from central Moscow via the E115 and M-8 is Sergiev Posad famous for its impressive monastery; The Trinity Monastery of St Sergius with its dazzling gold and blue minarets, ornate stonework and intricate designs. The Lavra’s museum, which houses a collection of royal portraits and icons. Please note the Lavra’s museum is closed on Mondays.
